so i guess i should probably update this, huh? london was beautiful: i’m fairly certain i brought sunshine with me (hey elyssa), because it didn’t rain the whole time i was there! it was also warmer than prague, a huge bonus. i also got to see my boyfriend, which was lovely, except now it’s made me slightly more homesick than i had been before. last weekend we went to cesky krumlov, a town in what i would say is the middle of nowhere, but it boasts the oldest wooden baroque theatre anywhere, or at least in the country. there were a lot of inconsiderate assholes on this trip, but i had two of my closest friends with me, so we got to sit in the corner and judge people. we also made friends with one of the administrators here, sarah, who is not a bitch like everyone thinks she is! she has some hilarious stories on top of an awesome english accent. the best part of this trip was definitely the last castle we saw, which was legitimately a fairy tale castle—from the outside. it had indoor heating, which is an upgrade from the previous castle, so we decided we would move in. except it was a hunting castle, which meant the decor was entirely guns and antlers. as well as a few heads. so it would need some redecorating. to be quite honest, now that i’m “settled in”, my mood has not been as great as it was the first two weeks. i’ve had to go back into counseling, and getting a good night’s sleep has become all but impossible. i really thought i left a lot of my issues at home, but i guess i didn’t. i have a great therapist though, so i’m hoping that she can help me just feel better and not want to go back to new york all the time. this weekend is (drumroll please)….. rome! with patricia. i’m so excited to eat ALL OF THE FOOD. and be warmer. and drink a lot of wine, probs. i would promise you pictures of my adventures, but as anyone with facebook can tell you, i am terrible at things like that. |

spent my evening at patricia’s, where she made me ridiculously good roast chicken with rosemary and garlic and all sorts of good things. and then we got mom-drunk with her friend who was visiting. three people, three bottles of wine. it’s a good night. Mar 2,2012 (0 notes)

since my last update, my week has been exceptionally unexciting. i tried nutella for the first time ever (don’t judge me), and stayed in on nights people went out. i had dance class again last night, and i realized that my instructor thinks i speak absolutely no czech. which, granted, isn’t that far off, but i at least know how to say yes, no, and the numbers! also hello and goodbye. but other than that i’ve been pretty boring. settling in to living here i guess. but i’m going to london this weekend to stay with ross, and also to visit with the lovely elyssa (who is supposedly on hiatus but it’s probably safe to say if i tag her in this she will see it), and i’m super excited! hopefully all my travel plans work out. i am super nervous about getting to the airport alone, not gonna lie. but in any case, my laptop is staying in the czech republic, so i will see you all on sunday night when i get back! dobry vecer :) |

quick update on the status of this afternoon: tried to get in the shower. sitting in my room in a towel with conditioner still in my hair waiting to get back in the shower. |
*my suitemate and her boyfriend just set off the fire alarm in the kitchen for the third time in under a week. learn. to. cook. |
there’s a fire starting in my heart.my weekend adventures turned into something completely unexpected, so i guess i will have to discuss thursday night: drag queens, bikers, and flaming shots (oh my!) our friend (warhol, as in andy) from tuesday night’s karaoke was DJ-ing a party at chapeau rouge, and we felt like we should go. granted, it was a 50 Kc cover (the equivalent of less than $3 USD), but it was fun; he played a lot more music with words than the previous clubs we had gone to. also featured was a supremely fierce brazilian drag queen that we got to meet. all in all, though, the party wasn’t that great, so we ditched around 1:30 to head to another bar—until we found out that they close at 1 a.m. on thursdays. nonsense. layla and james, aka my suitemate and her british boyfriend, suggest a bar they’re calling “harvey’s” that was close to the one we had planned to go to. upon arrival, we realize the place is called harley’s, as in harley davidson. yes, ladies and gentlemen, we ended up at a biker bar. in the czech republic. granted, it wasn’t as scary and intimidating as a biker bar in new york would have been (they even played rolling in the deep—the third time i had heard it that evening, mind you), but we were informed by our brooklyn native bartender that it was in fact sponsored by the prague section of hell’s angels. (i am as shocked as you, reader, to find out that exists). on to this “brooklyn-native bartender” that i spoke of. patricia and i had lost james and layla almost immediately after arriving, and so as soon as some biddie (as we like to refer to them) gave up her seat (and left a perfectly good gin and tonic), i parked my ass in it. and we sat there. for four hours. our bartender seemed happy to have found other people from new york, and so he spent the entire night coming back to talk to us. it’s not like we were going to say no—personally speaking, he kind of looked like a science teacher i had in high school that everyone had a crush on. he also made us free drinks! and gave us free tap water! not gonna lie, the free water was the highlight. i never thought i would miss that, but i do. by the end of the night, he could tell we were done (since it was like 5:30 at this point), and so he gave us a ginger ale and a sparkling water. but then his weird czech friend in a USA soccer jersey shows up, and he was being really awkward and kind of creepy. so he decides to make us B-52s, which for those of you not well versed in fancy-ass shots, is comprised of kahlua, bailey’s, and a little absinthe on the top—just enough so it will light on fire. i was not ready for that. but hey, once again, free. once the manager of the bar kicked us out (at 6 am), he tried to get patricia and i to go to another bar and have a drink with him—how about no. but our friendly american bartender (named ryan!) gave us his number and told us to “call if we needed anything”. patricia will be all over that, i’m sure. our other nights were less interesting. if you really care, send me an ask either here or at my real tumblr, @emilyrosem, and i will update. until then, i know this is a loooooooooong block of text on your dash. |

It's Strasbourg! Fun fact, Strasbourg was one a German city, which is why it's not frenchy-sounding. It's in the Alsace region that between all the wars that the French and Germans went through, flipped flopped between them until after WWII. I'M REALLY GLAD THAT YOU'RE HAVING FUN BUT I MISS YOU. also, there's a kitchen-furnishing store on my street that's called "For Lady." why thank you estela! i miss you too! side-eyeing that store’s name so hard tho. |
even rock hudson lost his heart to doris day.i started classes this week— my mondays are absolutely ridiculous, with two three-hour classes with a three hour break in between. my cultural history of the city professor is very british and an art historian, so he’s very into his architecture. he gave us these two huge course readers for a fourteen-week class. ah! i’m attempting to start the reading, but since the class is only once a week, who knows what my motivation will be? i then have law and human rights with a professor who is also a judge, which is pretty cool. he said because he is so young, he was preferred over older judges who have human rights biases due to the communist regime—he works in both brno in the czech republic and strasbourg in france, which is why his class is also only once a week. once a week is nice, but oh goodness is three hours a long time. on tuesday i have one class—the history of nationalism, which is twice a week, so it was only an hour and twenty minutes. and then i went on adventure to find my dance studio! i got on the metro, only to find out that the next stop is approximately around the corner from where i started from! so now i know i can walk from my normal metro stop, but i was so embarrassed. in any case, i’m now enrolled in a broadway dance class on tuesday nights for the rest of the semester. it was weirdly more modern/jazz than i was expecting, and the dance we’re learning is the beyonce song from the dreamgirls movie. eh. on tuesday i also finally saw the charles bridge! my friend patricia was my valentine for the day, so we walked across the bridge and back, then went to get coffee (or hot chocolate if you’re me), and hung out for a while. it was super cute. and now for the fun stuff: karaoke night at friends! so, friends is another gay bar. interesting how i always end up at those!? but anyway, they have karaoke every tuesday night, and this one felt like it was special since it was valentines day. as you can tell from my post’s title, i did indeed end up singing “look at me, i’m sandra dee”. we made friends with this awesome dj named warhol who’s throwing a party tomorrow night, and we’re most likely going to go. he told me i look like tyra banks, which i assume was a compliment? he also called me fierce, which was nice. that’s a compliment i’ve always wanted, not going to lie. we dealt with a lot of very long czech ballads though. i decided that all songs for karaoke should be capped at 4 minutes, because eventually it gets tedious, no matter how good you are. my roommate got serenaded, a couple of us got our personal space invaded by gay men, and some drunk biddies almost destroyed a no doubt song before i legitimately stole the mic from them. well. kind of. ;) but it was overall a good night— except the night transit system isn’t so great and we ended up getting a cab. which was fine—when split between four people it’s not terrible. i’ll give you another update after my bonding weekend with patricia—my roommate and two more of our friends are out of town for the weekend, so she and i will be having our own adventures. ahoj! |
